Live from the Macon Coliseum, it's the Boys Double-A basketball State championship featuring Mitchell Baker and Decatur and Championship weekend just rolls on on TV.

Hello, everybody.

Again, I'm Jim Tanaka.

These two teams know about champions shifts.

Mitchell Baker has won five, their last one in 2000.

Decatur has won four championships.

Their last won 1982.

The two guys to call it courtside stuck by Tenet and the elevator from Decatur, who is living a dream come true.

Herb Wise.

Well, Jim, much more on that to come.

Usually we have all access to the locker rooms.

This year, a little different.

We will tell you about that.

But what a terrific game it could be.

It should be.

Welcome to the boys, to a title game.

Herb White.

If there's an odd couple besides you and myself, it might be these two basketball teams.

Yeah, it's really going to come down to how well Decatur can handle the pressure from Mitchell Baker.

This is a team that likes to play full speed, all out for 32 minutes, and they're averaging over a hundred points a game.

Let's take a look at the key player for Mitchell Baker.

Eddie Dawson can do it all.

He can go to the hoop.

He can post up.

They love this kid.

He is a big time division one player or so we are told.

On the other hand, to Carter Curb White went there led them to not a state title but at least a long long ways there.

And there we see the starting lineup.

Any comments on that?

Because that'll be coming.

Get it out.

Well, Mitchell Baker is going to use a lot of players.

I guarantee you they're going to go about ten deep just from the way they play.

And they've got five players that can get double figures for them just about any night out on the Decatur side.

Johnson, their main man, What about him?

Herb Well, he's a double double guy, 17 points a game, ten rebounds.

That's big in any league.

So he's a senior leader and he's going to be a guy educators looking for to lead the defense.

Decatur is a gritty defensive team.

They're going to need every defensive effort they've got tonight against this Mitchell Baker Club.

And then you see Mr.

Right.

We'll tell you more about him.

Six, three, £300.

It should be a terrific game.

Let's go to our coverage address.

ANNOUNCER For tonight's starting lineups and the Decatur Bulldogs dressed in white as your home team.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the main event.

Let's get ready to rumble.

Have you attention for the starting lineup.

First for your Mitchell Baker Eagles and forwards a six foot one singer number for Eddie Deacon at Forward, a six foot three junior.

Junior Eddie Dolson.

And now for your Decatur Bulldogs, head forward five foot 11 senior number five Pro going forward six foot two, speed your number 12.

Evan Jones So you see the way he is.

I mean, he's a good there.

The starting lineup to get ready is Mitchell Baker against Decatur State poised to a championship coming You're watching the USA Basketball State Championships on TV.

Welcome back to the boys to a championship.

Let's go to our man courtside for this one, David Belsky.

David.

All right, guys, when I look at the Decatur Bulldogs, I still cringe.

This year's team used to amuse my high school team.

By halftime, we were looking at ways to keep them under 100 points, but they might have to score 100 against Mitchell Baker.

Coach Carter of Decatur said This is the fastest pace, most athletic team they've played all year, so they've got to slow them down now.

Back to you too, Herb and Stu.

Thanks, Dave.

That's what it's about Herb, isn't it?

It's the pace.

It's the tempo of this game.

Yeah.

Mitchell Baker is just a team that's not going to slow down the whole game.

It's going to be up to Decatur to try to slow him down.

Let's look at the officials for today's game.

And these are the guys that might need oxygen at halftime.

We'll keep our eyes on that, too, because these eagles in the red will just run and run and run and look for wholesale substitutions.

4 minutes into the first quarter here they come in with a new five.

We're ready to get underway.

Tip is controlled by, you know who Mitchell Baker and they will not be shy about pulling it up and putting it up.

And all of a sudden we got a real turnover.

You might see a lot of those in a game so fast Pace to Carter from the outside pulls up for the three.

That might be a good sign, but his chance of the leading scorer and it is three oh well the Gators came out last year and didn't hit anything Stu and they got off to a better start this year.

The Al Johnson Oh, most exciting coast to coast basketball to start off this tour championship.

Mitchell Baker walking around the zone and you're going to see a lot of zone I think from the Carter Wall three and those rebound handled by Johnson who dominated early early going well he missed that dunk but he got a lot of style points on that one.

So how important is it for the cameras to take the time to not be rushed in the early going to this game?

Very important.

And you're right in his own defense to try to slow things down a little.

Mitchell Baker in the zone.

But it's kind of a trap.

They're trying to get something going inside to the big guy.

I mean, big guy puts it up.

No good.

That was trash.

Like all £300 of him.

And it's a legit 300.

I asked him before the game inside Mitchell Baker nice easy hook and that's victorious burn for the easy true Here's that pressure there's the long pass up you want to take it of course if you have the wide open shot.

Yes you do a nice job two on one.

It's going to be interesting to see how Charles Wright can handle all the speed out here tonight, getting up and down the floor for 32 minutes early going.

And we'll try to keep the talk to a minimum because we might use a shot for the early going.

It is 5 to 2.

Carter not in control, but looking pretty good early.

And there's that pressure and we will keep our eye on the scoreboard because before the start of the game Coach Wilson indicator as a shot goes up goes in nicely done by Evan Jones That hurt He wants the first quarter somewhere the score to be in the teens.

Well and Mitchell Baker is going to take the first timeout that's a good sign for Carter Wilson Have you ever seen a field goal in a high school basketball for an awful long time in Georgia?

Have you ever seen a team like Mitchell Baker, who averaged 96 points a game 106th in the average?

I think it might have been 96, but whenever it's about three points a minute.

So that's unbelievable.

But, you know, the other interesting thing about this, too, this is a nice move.

Instead.

Yeah.

Let's take a look at the elevator from the kid or don't watch any old films or did they have films of you back down in the early fifties?

But that's pretty good right there.

Not bad.

It's interesting to coach is on these teams both played for their respective team Carter Wilson at the Carter played on their championship team in 1971 under Bob Rinehart and of course Rodney.

They played on two championship teams back in 89, 90 and 1991.

There's the zone effective so far for the Carter and they're going to run when they have a good shot.

The layup no good and that's what you in trouble against this Mitchell Baker team because they'll bring it right back at you.

They will not hesitate to pull up for a jumper or three to cater back in that zone.

Mitchell Baker Maybe one of those teams get so frustrated that they can't shoot in the first 15 seconds.

Low long three pointer, no good.

That was any.

JENKINS Do you have a feeling you can pull the trigger to take it from way up there?

And there you see five getting ready to come in for Mitchell Baker is the big man Jazz, right?

I'm telling you what, He's a graduating class by himself.

Sets defenders like a duck to water 9 to 511 left in the first quarter of a2a boys championship.

Glad you're with us here in Macon from the Macon Coliseum live three point up no good ticket in boxing out Let's see they're going to call a foul on Stanley a little something dictator little push underneath so far Decatur with dead zones and then Mitchell Baker not a whole lot of patience.

They're throwing up the long threes, too.

I don't think that's their game.

Let's set it up for you playing five in a row because soccer players will start touching the ball.

But you'll see they're all in there and this will go on every quarter and it you know, if the team doesn't even have time really to get loose shooting.

So it's going to be interesting to see if this zone can really affect them if they keep bringing in different players all the time.

It's tough to get your rhythm on the outside game, especially well with a team like Mitchell Baker.

What you're hoping to do is maybe get some transition baskets and easy hoops when the first of the five comes in up, the shot goes no good offering down to the Carter here, the cover of everyone around the boards for Mr. Carter team.

There's that pressure and it is relentless.

And if you're thinking what college team maybe this Mitchell Baker team is fashioned after.

Well, Coach May says I like Arkansas and they used to do that 40 minutes of but it's high school basketball they start I'll tell you what you got guts and you take a chance on that young fella Yeah he's got to be careful of the officials are going to watch him now because there's been contact on to play.

So he's got to be careful when he turns around with that shoulder at £140 shoulder.

Oh nine too early going.

Mitchell Baker probably a little frustrated, but they will get it going.

This is an offensive machine to Carter in that zone to the baseline offensive George Curry nicely drawn and still you know the best way to keep a team from running is to make your shots.

Now read Mitchell Baker is going to run even after the main basket, but it's a lot easier to get a easy layup off of the made shot.

So Carter can shoot a high percentage.

It's going to be working in their favor as Robby Johnson on that charge.

And there you see it a new five and continuous pressure Carter yet to go with a substitution and the man all the way that's what the Eagles will do to Carter trying to play across and there's that turnover and effective but Herb White still has the pretty good hands to Herb they wouldn't let you into the Carter locker room for what I understand Is that true or is that not true?

Because this is the second consecutive year that Carter was in the championship.

And from what I understand, your pep talk really did something last year.

Yeah, I went in for about 10 minutes before the game and tried to fire the kids up and they came out and lost by 20 or 25.

So I stayed as far away as I could from the dressing room this year.

But Carter did look over right before the game and give me the wings, so.

Oh, I thought he just gave you a wink and said, Stay away for at least three more quarters.

Up it goes and it goes.

But I do get to go in after the game if we haven't win.

So there you go.

D.J.

Jones with a little reference on that pressure.

I think he's coming at you.

Last year, he scored those points with a 96 to 106 and scored 124.

And again, what are your practices like?

We're up against?

Got to change them after each practice.

Well, both these veteran clubs, you see seniors and juniors all up down the lineup for both of them.

So I don't think there's any butterflies right now on both these teams have been there a lot inside.

Jones is trying to be effective and all of a sudden it's a96 game.

The 338 block of his first quarter turnover up and that's how they do him and the Carter trying to run and they've got to pull it back at least that's what the coach wants to do and slow it down.

Let's see if they do around the go on another turnover, maybe time for a timeout.

Slowing down a little help Carter don't want to take a timeout.

That could be a psychological thing.

Sometimes they just need to settle down and that's what Baker definitely has turned it up.

But that second unit that came in, which I think is the first unit that was such a team that we'll keep track of it for you.

They rotate him in the Carter in the zone inside.

Nice work to Carter Controls and let's see if they slow it down.

Evan Jones trying to bring it up still down that pass and here they go in for the layup.

That's the way they do it.

And he's awesome with an easy hook and a nice steal The corner a little rattled trying to bring it across half court.

Look at that pursuit and that's not the shot they want to take.

You don't want to go south of kindergarten left you there was a nine home run by Mitchell Baker.

They needed that but a little bit shaky.

Alexa Elvin Jones.

Nice turnaround but that percentage you say they won't go to three is locked up there inside and not to be ready Dawson Active on the inside you know he's only six two but his coach says he might be our best post player.

So look for him down low to get a lot of traction.

Even post guys up a lot.

The 10 to 29 first Quarter boys Double-A State championship pull up nicely done one go in the Carter controls have kept important pretty Carter only give him one shot because Mitchell Baker is going to get a lot of shots off the turnover so you don't want to give him offensive rebounds to not probably a good pass to put in a crowd right now.

Keep an eye on that score.

As we mentioned, Coach Wilson wants it in the teens after that first quarter.

Well, you're always going to have Mitchell Baker collapsing on the ball.

So if you're going to throw a pass, it's tough for a guy to catch.

It's going to be intercepted or they're going to slap it away because there's always going to be two or three defenders.

For Mitchell Baker on the ball, Coach Mays averaged 14 points, and he's a player for Mitchell Baker.

He loves his style.

He loves the defense there you see it swarming on someone's got to help and no one does another turnover up and in and it is the case for all I know for the easy hoop and if we were doing a shooting chart, I think he'd have at least three or four layups in the first quarter.

Central banker relentless in the red and there just to blow it didn't bring it across.

This is where they need to slow down and let's see if they do back out front.

David Harvin So let's settle this thing down the long three pointer, no goal, nothing but backward and they got the good luck already bent over grabbing those pants by the Pacers.

See in here the new five comes in and as you mentioned, this is the fourth substitution and here's the last basket and steal for Carter.

Seven turnovers in the first quarter.

Many of them leading to layups like that Kennard in bad way outside dangerous pass the completed up and no guard Evan Jones has had a couple but that one not today and there's that long pass Mitchell Baker setting the tone early inside they're relentless the various breaks gets the layup and the Carter bringing it across to control the but once again across halfcourt they look a little rushed in and out and that'll be a foul And Mr. Goins will go to the line and you know, it was funny because talking to Coach Woodson before the game, he said, look, we better pass up a good shot for a great shot, which is great.

But as a former player, you know, Herb, your idea of a good shot or a great shot might be a little different than the coach's.

Every shot you ever took was a great one.

And Steve, if you could see the basket, to me, it was a good shot.

The first one is good by Goins.

Well, the problem is not so much of Baker's interceptions have come in the fourth quarter before half court and they're going to get a good shot if they intercepted their indicator.

It's tough for them.

They like to go to the offensive board, but you send guys to the offensive board, you know, Mitchell Baker's going the other way.

So you've got to be aware of all of that.

14, 12.

So far, it's been a and frantic pace, but the score favor indicator for Baker trying to bring the ball inside and they do no good getting good penetration but it's got to be had a Jarvis Lambert trying that easy shot from inside easy for me to say from here Roscoe he also got called for the foul on the rebound.

So here we go.

Full court pressure.

You're going to see this all game long, Kenny.

The trigger and a dangerous spot to bring it in is that corner where he can be get double teamed but.

Oh okay.

Whoa.

Three pointer way outside and I think Devon Jones is going to have a cold talk with Coach Evans or Coach Carter to say, Hey, Curry, listen, listen, that's not exactly no shot.

We want yeah, he's already taken two or three quick shots and that's not what you want to do against this Mitchell Baker crowd.

That's what they want.

The Carter back in the zone.

15 seconds left in the quarter.

Mitchell Baker settling for the last shot of this quarter.

Four Corners better back at himself with six to go.

Let's see who pulls the trigger inside and looks like Holmes going to get a shot off as the clock ticks down exciting up and down.

Basketball stops and pressing just as we thought it would go after the first quarter.

You're watching TV, bringing you the best.

You're watching the USA Basketball State Championships on TV.

Two flights and a curb light, bringing you all the action of the boys to a state championship assessment of the first quarter.

Well, it's going to be a game of runs, too, just because of the nature of the way Mitchell Baker plays that Carter jumped out 9 to 1 and Mitchell Baker ran off about ten straight points and that was about the end of the quarter.

So I look for the runs from both teams to Carter again is you got to try to once they get past half court, I don't think Mitchell Baker is that great a defensive team in their half court but the problem is getting it past half court.

Do you feel like you're that guy in the Staples commercial?

We got to kind of talk to them.

I do.

I do feel like that got it.

Many times.

I feel like that guy gave us kind of I mean, our man Day pass helps the court.

So I.

Did.

You all right?

Yeah.

Yeah, I'm here.

Coach Carter.

He says he wants to trick him.

He says Mitchell Baker is expecting for them to go down the center.

He said this time beating the press.

They're going to try going around the side.

Let's see if it works.

All right, So we're going in the side pocket.

If you're Carter Wilson, Coach Carter Wilson, the pace has been Mitchell Baker's.

Put the sports on your side.

Are you happy?

I guess you are.

You got it?

Yeah.

You got to be happy to score 60 point game right now, but I look for shooting percentages up a little bit for Carter in the white as we remind you Mitchell Baker in the red they have not hit a three until that point but it is Carolina with the first three Mitchell Baker had been old for five before that 117 12 at the Carter slowing it down just a bit working it around that zone long three pointer off the back and the Carter will control or so we thought Mitchell Baker this will be an easy layup in for Carolina but misses slam no good third shot is good it's all thanks to thank you very much and sometimes you look at the faces of players to see if they're getting rattled.

All right.

Now is on the edge of just getting a little rattle right 12 the pace Mitchell Baker's way.

Well, Eddie Dotson hasn't been in the game for a while.

And Kevin Jones is taking some ill advised shots for the Carter.

He's got to make sure he's in a shooting range.

That last one was about a 30 footer.

And remember, we said Coach Wilson passed up a good shot for a great shot.

There's the steel plate in those lanes.

Mitchell Baker, so quick on the wings, anticipating passes, Eddie Jenkins tried to take it in for the hoop, couldn't make it.

But again, another turnover.

You got to use some back door sometimes with those overplays Mitchell Baker working it around that zone up the Jones and it goes still Otto with a three and all of a sudden the threes are starting to drop the score scores 22 to 12 and a good timeout by Coach Wilson because if you let this team get on a roll, it could be over quickly.

Yeah, well, Mitchell Baker, if they're going to shoot the threes, they're going to be almost impossible to beat because they're going to score off of their pressure and off of their defense.

But if they can stand out there and shoot the three two, it's really going to make it tough for a dictator.

Those turnovers hurting, too.

And a lot of the times when you had that turnover, they have led to a basket.

High school sports right here on t TV.

That track.

Should we go to cater to inbound Mitchell Baker on an eight oh run to start the second quarter.

There's that pressure they love double teaming and as they said they try to break it up the side up and that might be offensive.

Nope we got a little push from the back.

The gator got a break there.

Did look like an offensive charge.

David Harman's got to be a little more confident with the ball when he gets the ball in the back court, get it up the floor.

They did get it to the middle of that time.

Austin Johnson looking to get back in the game for Decatur Now make the call Herb up over it looked like a charge maybe didn't have his feet established the to the foul line the kid who goes for games with the first of all a 62% three point shooter 40 to 12 this year Baker up by ten but the score in the range that was a killer bulldogs would like to have a second one is up second what is good oh that's a quick ten points for Mitchell Baker that's for sure to start this quarter.

Yeah they can score in bunches.

There's the zone to cater trying to be aggressive down low way outside for the three pointer.

Patty Jenkins getting some confidence in the corner off and running the guy up good got Luke Tazewell 300 foul trouble he can move that 330.

Well after doing well that's he has good footwork Mitchell Baker trying to attack popping it back outside going for the three not to be the corner controls and they do not want to try to go for that long pass so Baker going for the steal inside nicely done for the dunk just lay it in maybe ill advised Well actually he'll maybe they're definitely ill advised Hey you know you don't realize how tired you get out here and just lay the ball in the basket Everything you can get against this Mitchell Baker defense big punt Johnson missed that dunk something Herb White never did in his entire career.

Here we go.

Nicely done working it inside just doesn't get it.

Five out of five in for Mitchell Baker.

Tell you one thing, if you play for Mitchell Baker, you got it.

Got it.

Like one thing you get play time the corner, bring it across and there's a small chance right up he'll go to the line for two good work against the press again they're haters when they get that ball into the middle, they're having some success.

He's got to make the free throw.

Mitchell Baker's not going to give you anything clean, make the dumps and make the free throw.

Jazz shooting two plays offensive line for the football team.

Third quarter anywhere he wants to play.

Nice touch nice ball, just doesn't go people.

I try to curb white bringing you all the action from right here and make him glad you're bored Don't forget we've got two more games triple A State Girls and Boys championship.

We'll be back with you for the boys.

Second foul shot by Charles Wright was good and a good crowd.

And here's to folks coming down for Atlanta to see the Carter play and all the way up from Mitchell Baker.

And we got a lot of folks in here.

This has got us up by three.

It was a terrible not too bad it didn't go for Carter slowing it down.

Whole package swarming after bringing across the halfcourt line, as we do.

Good looks good idea, but a tough pass to catch it.

Here comes Mitchell Baker, right back at you to the hole and an offensive foul.

All right look look like a break 30 Carter too.

And the thing is, when you play against a team like Mitchell Baker, everything you do is speed it up a little bit.

So nice pass him.

But everything is just a little quick.

There you see the replay that when you go to Carter High, guy's going to have to say that was a little questionable.

The various Lambert scratching his head, but no time to scratch your head because you got to keep your hands up because you are pressing.

And there it is.

You're all over the place.

Carter Wilson That's why go behind the back.

Just fundamentally sound is what you've got to do in this ball game against Mitchell Baker and Carter.

Inside the chest right here goes up strong.

Nice move reverses and it's good so far has been delicious keeping them in their 22 way team.

Well they have no answer for him inside Mitchell Baker kind of a slight quick team.

So if they can't get it inside, they're not going to be able to stop Chase long.

Three pointer, No good by Lambert he goes to Carter scores right where they want him a double team and no one helping so smartly Mr. Johnson says timeout watch regroup and Carter Wilson making the point you got to come back to the ball against Mitchell Baker.

Maybe Chaz, right, needs to go down the floor, but everybody else has got to be ready to come back and help against that pressure and another little run by the Carter Center to get back in this thing.

If they made the free throws in the dunk, we'd have a tie ballgame.

And he said it.

If if they continue to do it and it like this, the Carter will have to be happy at halftime.

But six straight points for Carter.

Although, Ron, let me remind you that all the state basketball championships going to seem live on the gp-b website.

That's a w w w gpb talk.

That's prep sports plus Fridays 730 exclusively on TV.

Joe Carter bringing it across relentless pressure.

And it's amazing they can keep it going like this.

Here they go.

Mitchell Baker, with them, it really doesn't matter if they have two or one or fewer one, they're going to take it out.

The hurt.

Oh, just let loose.

And he is I'm going to pick high and blocked by Eddie Jenkins not to be the bad left hander almost gone almost going in and he is huffing the pocket.

Yeah.

He's working hard in there man.

Moving that 300 up and down the floor.

At this pace, they're going to have to get him some blows in here sooner.

Center Lane.

Let's take a look on the replay.

Great block Great hustle to get back by Jenkins Jazz knew he was going to get fouled on that one just threw it up to get the two.

And I'll tell you what.

Jazz is a smart player.

No, he doesn't have good hops.

So he uses the basket, tries to reverse it up and forced him no good.

But at least he knows, Hey, I'm not going to dump this thing, so I'm just going to try to reverse it.

Let the basket protect me.

Nine points, three boards.

Just be about to find a lot of physics for him to toe and only a sophomore, dare I say, still growing.

2290 to Carter, always down by three in our school board.

So there we go back in alley oop Big sigh for Mitchell Baker.

That's too easy.

That's B.J.

Jones with the nice Easy Hoop, two well-coached teams.

And there's a foul.

I'll tell you what Mitchell Baker does really well.

Her shoes, the ball goes in.

They are right in position to press.

I mean, there's no doubt.

Don't you pat yourself on the back for the hoop.

They are in position and they're all over it.

And that's a key.

But that is eight fouls on Mitchell Baker.

So you care to be going to the line for one and one and 330 to go in this quarter two Carter has got to make the free throws at the jump this last pass is a great pass underneath good hands.

D.J.

Jones with the help of a Jones to shoot from the sideline, 75% foul.

Sure to prepare for the season.

First one's up and it is good All the Carter's got to be feeling pretty good, Stu.

I mean don't know what's going to happen next.

330 but they must have double digit turnovers already and to still be in this ballgame with all those turnovers, they should be.

I don't know what you're doing at halftime.

One suggestion, don't go in the locker room that half things are looking pretty good as the second one goes 2421 with 330 left in the second quarter of the Boise State championship.

Mitchell Baker to try to trigger it.

And against that pretty aggressive zone defense, the killers put it up and why shouldn't that are only down by three oh that's right call for the foul the second on his Yeah he got £292 over there in the way the last ten is what caught the foul.

Now let me ask you one thing.

He went down on that charge.

Do you if there is one player on this, Mitchell Baker, if there is not two players on the team has over.

But the Oscar the Oscar is coming up and Josh might get one for that good athlete for the big guy three point away offside Carolina with another one Tracy Carolina die Tracy Carolina excuse me There's the pressure the catering that's looking up court they're bringing up the side Well that was close to the inside Nicely done big basket by the cater they needed to answer that three ball Goins got some hops he took it right to the hoop.

They're starting to warm up on the plate.

Eddie Jenkins from the three point line 3223, pressure is on.

Talk about backcourt pressure.

That's so much pressure on the kid.

Just a lot of time left in this ballgame.

Well, they pick your pocket from behind.

They look out.

Carter forcing the issue a little bit there and you can't afford to do that set point game right here.

Carter needs to stop dealing with that three point shooting.

Mitchell Baker starting to warm up a little.

Remember, they were four five indicator one for four.

So Mitchell Baker has hit four of their last eight.

Just a moment.

BAKER But that comes at 50%, which is why they're up by seven long, dangerous pass.

And we have fun with jazz, right?

Just because I got to talk to him as a nice young man before the game.

But you talk about stamina.

It's not just Chaz right?

It's this entire dictator.

Oh, yeah.

Well, I mean, let's see what happens deep into the third quarter, maybe to start that fourth, because Mitchell Baker bringing the fresh legs, they've been pressuring all game long and keep it that way.

Right.

And that's why the threes Mitchell Baker you so much you think Well, we do okay we did a nice job we you know, we got the ball down there and they didn't get the fast break and then they hit the three.

That could be Carter with the 13 turnovers and that's going to hurt him.

Already has.

Oh nice fake nice move.

Andy Dorsey with the ball fake and then through the hole for the layup McAdoo bringing it up the side like they told us all to try and there's the rock there's a turnover in this Mitchell Baker as good as their defense is they've got some fine players they are not just a defensive team.

You can tell that by the way they're shooting three.

Let's see that nice move right down the good.

Carter now with 14 turnovers a nightmare for coach block there for coach Wilson good defense there by the catering on the ball going the other way Well important minutes 36 here for the Carter try to get back in this thing the nine down eight to come down and get a good look here at the bucket have you brought up a good point earlier it in a matter of a minute and a half this is Mitchell Baker.

Tim can score ten points.

So you're right, this last minute and a half of the quarter is very important.

Nice drive.

Nice work by Clark Goins, who's really had a nice first half, 30 to 25 to win.

Coach Carter Wilson would like it.

And the Carter with another turnover themselves maybe should have slowed that one down He's one on to nowhere to go no layup even if he beats his one man there's another one there Carter Wilson, to try to give him some advice at half at the half and say, listen guys, you get it across half court then take your time.

Having successful when they get it over the Carter attacking inside good looking I hope but not to be up and good nicely done Corey Moon with the rebound and hope in less than a minute to go 3227 oh inside too easy for Stanley Wilson Yeah split the zone that's what you want to do beat the to the zone defenders and then you're got to have somebody open dangerous pace ball pass to Carter I thought would slow it down but no but that's a tough start.

That is a tough shot.

But a lucky break maybe on the call.

Kind of a phantom foul there.

But for the guys from the Carter, I'll take it.

Does it surprise you in the first half that the Carter has gone to the hoop and then when they break that press, not slow it down to pull it back out?

Oh, no.

You have to go on occasions to do that.

You got to know what the odds are.

You know it.

That was not a good play there.

You're out of control.

Didn't get a good shot.

Just got bailed out by the foul.

So, you know, after you've seen it for a half, sometimes you can come back out and play a little smarter against that pressure in the second half.

It'll be interesting.

But again, this Mitchell Baker team is a good offensive team out of their halfcourt set.

We've seen some nice passing and some nice three point shooting know for Moon with his second foul shot.

Not today.

36 seconds to go in what has been an up and down ball game in this state.

A high school basketball championship and it looks like Mitchell Baker just trying to go for the last shot and indeed the coach Rodney Mays, has put up one finger, please, because Mitchell Baker can probably say, well, 30 seconds can get in five shots.

This is probably as long as they've held the ball all year.

The kid remains in that zone.

12 seconds to go, Cannon.

You want to attack now?

And they do.

Oh, looking at a three and.

JENKINS Nope.

So is Buddy.

And Buddy Dawson takes it and he hits it.

And what a roll, madam Top, that will be long shot.

All those girls.

Not today.

37 to 28 on that Jenkins three pointer.

What a first half of action it should be.

It has been for Carter down by nine.

And let's go to our man Dave on the courtside.

What's the coach?

All right, Coach Mays, you had a run at the end of the first quarter.

Lots to tell me about that with our press.

We just got to continue to play hard.

One, keep a fast paced game.

I mean, we've been better.

We keep fast game.

We're not going to try to slow the pace down.

Look at it.

You know, they don't have the defense.

So we just want to run and run and keep it fast.

PACE.

Well, they're slowing it down the beginning right there.

Looking good.

What did you do?

What changes that you made?

Well, what we did was we're just went to have a quick trip so we can make it on the halfway set one, make a better shot.

So we didn't want to have, quote, trap on it.

And how are you going to contain the big guy in there?

Well, what we going to do?

We not to worry about him too much, but just want to confront him down the podium.

MacGyver's not doing enough, you know, by doing it.

We want to put by to and buck him out and getting out.

All right.

Thanks a lot, Coach.

You're watching the USA Basketball State Championships on TV.

And welcome back to the Macon Coliseum.

Halftime of the Boys Double-A State Basketball Championship.

Mitchell Baker leads Decatur 3728.

Let's go downstairs to David Belsky.

David.

All right, thanks a lot, Jim.

We're here with Mitchell Baker's principal, Principal Fenlon, and the principal of Decatur.

Principal Christie.

Principal Christie, you have a good basketball program.

That's obvious.

Tell me a little about some other programs you have.

Well, I'm really proud to be here at Decatur High School.

We've had a great athletic year with our Jay ROTC raiders taking the state champion.

We've had athletes to compete in state cross-country meet and swimming, and it's just been a great year overall.

I'm very proud that we've gotten this far and we expect to take this thing well.

How's the spirit of the school right now?

The school just excited you can see that the whole other side is simply Decatur.

We couldn't wait to get down here and bring this home here.

Well, Principal Christie is a new principal, but we have another new principal right here.

And Principal Fenlon.

Yes.

Excited about being here, having this opportunity.

We have a tradition in basketball at Mitchell Baker.

This is the sixth time in the final we are working in other sports to bring back the tradition.

Also excited about all of the programs that we have at our school.

We feel like it's a well rounded program and we have an opportunity for the kids to really make a difference in their lives.

Working with them got a great staff from the school, coaches and teachers.

We're just real happy to be here.

Well, tell me about some of the academics and how the players get into those academic programs, how well it's going.

Actually, I think that the coaches do an outstanding job with the players, staying behind them, encouraging, working with the teachers, the teachers are very, very receptive when coaches are wanting to get involved with their players other than on their field, working with them in the classroom, study halls and things of that nature.

Okay, well, thank you very much.

I appreciate it.

Back to you.

I thank you, David.

So it's going to be a great second half coming up between the Carter and Mitchell Baker.

We throw it courtside to Herb and Stuart High, coach to Clyde Tech.

Stu It's Herb holding up all right so far during the first half.

He is holding up okay.

During the first half.

He has not jinxed his alma mater, but we are not letting him not only in the locker room of Decatur, we're not even letting him on the side to cater for.

We remember what happened.

If you missed us last year, my partner here went into the to cater locker room to give that old pep talk, and they.

They lost.

Let's take a look at some first half highlights.

And I think the difference a lot of the time were those three pointers and some of the turnovers off the pressure.

There's one turnover right there and as we watch, we expected Mitchell Baker to come out to press.

We maybe didn't expect to cater to hit some tough shots like that and off the court.

Jones There on the tough shot.

He made that one.

But here's another interception.

Nice pass inside.

So as we watch these highlights, Herb, what are your telling your guys in the locker room?

We know what Mitchell Baker is going to do.

They're going to press.

If you're Decatur, what are you going to do?

Well, you just got to cut down on the turnovers.

I think it was about 14 turnovers there at the end of the half.

Decatur is going to cut that in half.

And really, Mitchell Baker is this tough, But to cater for some of the issues sometimes to some of those turnovers, it was the Carters fault, not Mitchell Baker's and those are the ones you got.

Mitchell Baker is going to get a certain amount, but you cannot force the ball when it's not there against a team like Mitchell Baker and I'm telling you, what makes Mitchell Baker really tough against you is the three point shooting.

And we saw it.

They came on in that second quarter.

And here you look at the score, obviously a nine point difference let's make that nine point difference.

But you can see how many more shots.

And we were talking about it while we were in break, how many more shots Mitchell Baker has taken.

And what's unbelievable, shot 12 free throws.

Mitchell Baker's not taking a free throw and yet they're up by nine points to Carter shooting a good percentage, but only got off 21 shots, Mitchell Baker 36 shots and 14 threes.

And then again the turnover margin.

So the Carter, when they get the good shot, they're making it, but again, they're forcing it a little too much.

Well, I think the reason why Mitchell Baker hasn't had a foul such as they can't catch up on them, the foul.

We're going to take a break.

We're going to come back.

Second half action, third quarter action in the boys state to a championship right after this broadcast of USA Basketball on TV.

TV is made possible in part by the following corporate partners.

You're watching TV, bringing you the best.

You're watching the GHC basketball state Championships on TV.

What will Carter do in the second half?

Let's send it down to David Zaleski.

Courtside.

All right.

Well, thanks a lot, Coach Wilson.

You started out strong, but you learned that Mitchell Baker can score in bunches.

Well, we knew that coming into the basketball game, we did a pretty good job of controlling the tempo early on, but they got a few too many scores on us there in the second quarter.

We got to get the tempo back down to our liking.

Then we got to get after these guys a little bit more on the defensive end of the court.

All right.

Best of luck in the second half.

Back to you.

All right.

So here we go fans here, pretty good crowd for the boys to a championship.

3728 Mitchell Baker, we just saw Coach Wilson.

He said, yeah, I'd like to keep it in the high twenties.

He is in the high twenties.

Unfortunately, Mitchell Baker's at 37, which is a low, low scoring game for them.

Yeah.

And that, you know, if Coach Wilson had been asked for the game, if you can hold Mitchell Baker 37 halftime would you feel pretty good?

And he'd say, Yeah, but the key indicator is just turning the ball away over way too much.

Let's look at the leading for Mitchell Baker.

There you see it, Carolina leading the way.

And Dawson, their main man coming in second, and Freddy Carter right in double figures inside and already a turnover the other way with a nice easy layup and that's the way you're going to start the second half.

Well Goins is playing a nice game started a good first half.

It's picking up Mitchell Baker and then he set it up and they continue to hit those three with the pressure.

There's going to be a tough team to beat tonight.

Carter Working against that constant pressure for Mitchell Baker up with the Shot short.

You know, it's better to go without the dog.

Nice work inside with a little to Yeah so a lot of unforced turnovers and it's just not slowing down.

I want to play you're not seeing any pictures so we'll do a little more pull by play for you and we'll have that released in a second.

And we are back.

It's just Mr. Layup, That's all you missed.

Well, spared a beer play by play on radio Still I was all excited.

5132.

Well, the Mitchell Baker crowd's excited.

They took us out to a 19 point and a nine point lead.

2 minutes.

And what is it, 41 seconds ago.

Unbelievable how they can score what was 37 to 28.

So in less than 3 minutes they scored 14 points.

It's been a 43 turnovers.

None of that threw the ball.

Right.

They got almost slowed down.

Now, I'm not going to play.

I'm just gonna make a tag.

And when you do that, you're playing into their hands.

You just have to concentrate every game.

And if you go, don't have something and you got to play the ball out and not just 17 turnovers now, so they got three turnovers in the first half minutes.

It is hard and it's not going to get better.

The thing about greatest thing, like Mr. Baker, if you can't get it, you can start playing better.

They're not going to slow it down.

You have the opportunity to get back in the game.

Seem to see a lot of the men in possession that at 32.

Mitchell Baker in the state championship, Mitchell Baker continues to win that you had Mitchell into the corner working inside 55 to 27 and that is basketball.

Carter looking a little shell shocked right now.

Still, they are not moving well.

They're tired, they're a little confused, and they're just going to have to regroup.

Right now, it's a state championship game.

You just got to realize if you can get back in this game, there's still time.

You're going to have to give it everything you got.

And we understand our picture is back, which is good news.

We'll let the action tell the story.

That is the story.

Wonderful.

And that's just wonderful basketball right there.

Carolina having a tremendous game, 5532.

What a third quarter this has been.

The Mitchell Baker showing you why they're here.

Relentless pressure, Good three point shooting, which surprised everybody myself, the chatter, just a little shock and that's what happens.

You get a little nervous.

You try for the home run and out of bounds.

The ball goes.

Just a moment ago, it was 17 turnovers, obviously 18, maybe even 19 in that last 30 seconds that Coach Wilson didn't know exactly what to do at this point.

He's told them, you know, you tell them at halftime and they come back and it's like you didn't even talk tough.

So what can you do?

And it might seem easy, but once you're in a game and the tempo and the emotion, you know, as a player, I know as a player, it just gets the best of you sometimes.

Do the whole night gone by any second due to his body control.

And I'll tell you what, that's at least the game.

The 56 layup that they've had this quarter where they can score punches.

You know, another thing is when you've got so many players playing, as we see Mitchell Baker getting ready to bring in five players, you don't worry about fouls here.

It's absolutely right.

Who cares if you have to?

You know, all the guys are coming in, so they worried about getting the fouls.

Mitchell Baker has so many more to give.

Yeah, they absolutely do.

They're not going to worry about a guy fouling out.

They've got 12 guys to play and all of the guys can score the largest lead of the game.

5732 for Mitchell Baker 911 from the field for Mitchell Baker this quarter many of them layup at two threes and the rest layups to Carter trying to slow it down trying to gain some composure Mitchell Baker trying to press the issue as they have all game up it goes three pointer probably ill advised and he goes to Carter and they are constantly running to Carter back on defense so Baker sees it takes a shot fires look at that inside play.

They're just all over the theater.

That's the rebound.

Ford Guards has played a very nice game, trying to slow down the double team.

And boy, that's a tough job.

I was going to say, you don't want to try to dribble through a press, but maybe sometimes it works.

Oh, man, what a move over his head by Jamal as well.

But maybe they're just telling you how it's going.

Well, that's a beautiful shot, but just unforgivable defense.

He took the ball out three steps past half court, drove it all the way to the basket.

Nobody stepped in front for the charge.

Nobody challenged him.

And that's not defense.

Now, if you're if you're back at your local station going, all right, let's see.

But watch this.

Marquette Down is a highlight.

Oh, that's nice.

Well, absolutely no help there by Decatur.

Just a lot of people reach in.

And that's what happens when you get tired.

And for the easy shot, nicely done.

But it doesn't matter because they'll come right back at you.

You want to help will try to hit the hook up with a three in with four 3 to 4 with an effort and they just keep going.

You're right here.

But from the outside they're that much tougher.

And I guess now the Carter says if you want to shoot and run, we'll do it with you up and in.

But you're going to have to do a lot more than that to stop this team.

Yeah, I again, Mitchell Baker, we heard all about their pressure, all about their defense, all about how they score in transition.

But their last six or seven threes.

They've probably made four or five of them too.

I mean, they are a very, very good shooting team.

And if they're hitting those, I mean, you're just just about out of luck, I will tell you as they turn it over.

An amazing stat that up and in no good to Carter with this rebound that Mitchell Baker may just score as many points in the third quarter as they did in the first half.

It'll be close the pressure by Mitchell Baker to Carter cracks it up with the three short with the three air ball up north and he's done that three times that low and a good looking athlete.

He has made his presence felt inside and that's where Mitchell Baker is vulnerable if anywhere in the paint because they have slight players, they don't have much size.

Corey Mooney has got at least three easy hoops on shots.

He just haven't been air balls or here he goes and he has a strong, good looking athlete, knows where it is.

It's going wrong.

He sees it short now, up with the rebound.

An error in all counts puts Wilson may decide he might drop Wilson and right at the center or clean right at the same time just you know try to get the ball in the floor pass the pressure and then work it inside to have some success.

Now to get down 22, you're going to have to have a lot of success in the paint.

Also, if you bring in two guys, maybe that takes you and you're absolutely right, which is doing take one less guy to maybe help with the pressure, but we'll see what they can do.

Our man, Chaz Wright, who had a nice first half, got a lot of easy hits underneath movement, took over.

Let's see if the size inside can make a difference for the Carter, who now by all by 22 look at that field goal percentage by Mitchell Baker in the second half, 79%.

And that three of those are three pointers and rest pretty much layup tough pressure.

How do you feel after the Kennedy shooting 50% here now down by 22 long three pointer no good rebound and Mitchell Baker controls way up to get that rebound as a good looking player I don't know why we didn't see him earlier now six four it's like he goes about 225 and I got him listed six three, only a sophomore.

There's a man jazz right up in his boot again.

And what a sensational third quarter he is having, really keeping the Carter in this ballgame.

Well, like to have those two coming back.

We'll be back to two years.

How about Coy Moon, a jazz, right?

So we knock it down to 20 points to Carter has it for Baker looking for some shots.

Things have slowed down just a bit to reach him, but no foul.

A long three pointer for the short by Eddie Jenkins.

But there's the rebound a turnover now educator in control with 33 seconds to go not slowing it down one they're looking to go to the hole up with the shot no good coy move couldn't put it in and I'm not sure I didn't see what happened there.

It was a very upset Ford Goins, I just blocked out and we were blocked out by a player official.

But then a little physical underneath, maybe a little frustration.

Here we go.

There's moon looked like he was fouled but nope Goins up and let's see.

Oh, I think it was accidental.

I don't think he was 40.

You think he was turning around him?

It's hard to say.

He knew he felt the pressure there.

I think he knew there was a player there.

Oh eight points in the third quarter, by the way.

Boy, you're right.

You're looking at the head of jazz right now to think to do something other day.

Referees talking in oversight hearings.

It's been a good playing game.

Let's keep it under control.

Lynda Carter has run into a couple of Buzzsaw the last two year that Wilkinson County Club was a great club They played last.

Don't put excuses for Utah even try to be making excuses for you check and kept on hoping to advance.

But what do I do now?

They got blown out last year.

It was a technical foul, a flagrant foul called Goins up in good control.

Get the ball back after this.

So they've got it under 20, right?

I'll tell you what, I give Carter a lot of credit.

They could have easily afforded it looked like they had it completely out of hand and they have hung in there.

Well, and also all this time, give them a chance to catch the breath a little bit, get two or 3 minutes going with the officials concerned.

And now 23 seconds left.

That holds for one.

Here's to try to get a bucket.

You're down 16 and yet you still got a chance going into the fourth quarter to get it in doubt it it looks like to just be true.

Mitchell Baker, in his own first time we've seen it, or is it a match up?

Well, it's just off the inbounds play as time goes on.

And then there's another turnover dunk from hard foul and decrease.

Carolina will go for it next.

You know, you have it you have a possession to take the last shot, you gain a little momentum.

What happened to turn it over the course the other way?

Yeah.

Again to cater their own worst enemy Just an absolutely terrible pass, not concentrate.

And Mitchell Baker will have two free throws here.

Decatur will have time to get up the floor and get a shot.

But, boy, you wanted that last shot converted.

The only down came.

I used to have a coach that said a second is worth a lifetime.

Usually said that to us with about 30 seconds to go and we're down by 12.

But anything can happen that has 7 seconds to go.

In his third quarter, the boys to a championship.

The kid will try one last shot, but here there is a turnover.

2 seconds left again, trying to beat the pressure, trying to split the double team with the dribble in.

This Mitchell Baker crowd is so to try to beat that double team, they're going to slap the ball away.

You got to find somebody open to pass to cater, to try to get something up and 2 seconds too long, pass the chance right intercepted and that will be the corner putting good effort there.

So as we head into the fourth quarter the boys to a state championship 6344 Mitchell Baker over Decatur.

We'll be back with fourth you're watching the USA Basketball State Championships on TV.

And welcome back to the boys to a state championship.

Let's find out what was happening in the huddles.

David Nelson was courtside for us.

All right.

Well, Coach Wilson was very calm and collected.

I think that's how he's trying to make his team appear.

But he said, you guys have one more chance.

You got to take it.

Fight to the end.

Well, that's what you got to do.

And this was more of a mitchell Baker quarter, 26 points in that quarter.

That's what they believe it or not, usually averages.

Well, we got a good look at what they could do in about four three pointers and then the rest just pressure turnovers.

And I'm telling you, this is a very, very good offensive machine this Mitchell Baker slow the gators not played their best game there's no doubt about it.

But you got to say it's because of Mitchell Baker's defense.

Well, it's I've seen a lot of high school basketball teams play.

I've never seen one with this kind of pressure for minute, one to the last seconds of the game, to Carter working against Mitchell Baker, trying to get the get shots.

Now, pulling up for the three no good by David Hartman Up and rebound no good Their success rate will try to muscle it up only does that tell you, Stu?

I saw the four and five boys play last night.

This makes the Baker team play with any of the teams we saw in Atlanta.

They don't have the size, but they don't need it.

They are quick and they are relentless and they are athletic.

And there's the jumper no good inside.

D.J.

Jones misses the ball.

And here we go, the Carter with another possession.

And they have a chance to cut this streak.

But look at that trust and trust when you're down on the ground with the ball trying to slow down a bit, try to get some control.

But Mitchell Baker will let you know there's chance in the right place at the right time with the hoop.

Great hustle by both teams there.

Everybody on the floor got a 15 point game and you're absolutely right, you call it if it's one we can't get.

Mitchell Baker has a pretty good set up and get it inside.

They are sliding get them underneath one another turnover The Celtics have a make a little run trying to control the ball not to be well there you saw it again just an ill advised move by David Hartman to try to out dribble to Mitchell Baker kids pick that ball up you only down 15 you come down and get a two or three and you're really at back in this game nowhere to go even if he gets past one of those guys.

Mitchell Baker, a team with a lot of tradition and won five titles in the nineties and Mr. Carter too you remember from last year second straight year they're be playing for the state championship.

So both schools with a lot of tradition and both schools with a lot of talent Decatur going man to man now trying to create a little pressure of their own 629 left Mitchell Baker you know is going to try to use that quickness and they do and two Carter with a chance to come into this league set it up and look something for a good shot to go to the foul line.

Mitchell Baker continues the pressure There's Chaz White in for easy lay up and here we go every possession big that Carter's really got to play smart I think you know they go man to man.

Take away that three point shot from Mitchell Baker.

Let's see.

Got a ballgame.

Still good pressure on the perimeter by the Carter side Blocks has right hands up with the ball and here we go.

Got to slow it down.

Got to work for a good shot.

Now, that's two possessions out of last three that the Carter has left the turnover Kerr does not taking care of the ball and again they're back in this game.

You got to realize that every possession right now is huge.

Well, here's the thing.

You know, Mitchell Baker isn't going to slow down.

That's time.

So you're going to get a chance to get back in his pocket.

You're going to get a lot of possession.

So make sure you're more valuable because you're going to have less.

Well, you figure they're going to put it in the cooler, you know, with a minute and a half, 2 minutes to go.

Mitchell Baker They're going to be very tough because they're so quick.

So you got to take advantage these next three months.

Well, Carter has started off the fourth quarter with a six out run inside.

Nicely done.

Jabari Lambert with the hook that stops the bleeding a little.

There's another turnover on Mitchell Baker's got four guys at half court.

Dictator has to if they get to pass to half court, they're going to have somebody open back into the ground to paint a ghost ball on the ground, try to settle it down a little.

Mitchell Baker trying to go to the outside shot down by Eddie Johnson.

That was a nail in the coffin right there.

One of them, anyhow, let's get back to 17, another turnover and how quickly they score.

He set it all game, Mitchell Baker to steal it.

They put it right up.

Oh yeah.

Offensive foul.

Hubie Carter had their chance right there in about the five and a half minute marks Do again for a three turnovers that weren't necessary and Mitchell Baker took advantage of them just like they've been doing all right as open underneath lays it in to Carter 24 turnovers and I thank you to say Mitchell Baker scored on 18 or 20 of those absolutely right back in the zone to Carter showed back to back for a second Mitchell Baker slowing it down themselves a little for 36 so they can smell that state title.

Maybe they just want work it around for a good shot earlier back outside agitator When did you decide to come out and play man to man?

And that's nicely done.

Good ball, good adjustment for the lay up Well again I think the Carter Mr.

Chance about 2 minutes ago when they could have cut this probably under double figures you try to go behind the back again against that pressure and just can't do it.

Now you got you've got to you got to pass through the pressure.

You got to bring a man to the middle.

Sometimes they just break it up and you got to give Carter credit for coming back.

I mean, they were buried in that third quarter and came back and made a game of it.

This didn't take advantage of the opportunity they had with about five and a half to go in this game and they could have probably got it down under double digits.

They had their moment still in the zone and now they're showing a little pressure of getting that ball.

Here we have the break.

Nice lamb.

Nicely done, Ron Johnson with the layup.

But you get the feeling and it's a strong feeling a little too late and now they're in man.

Amanda Carter having to pick up no choice here.

Now, this is a quick team.

This is Mitchell Baker.

Team will break it down.

They're quick and they're a good passing team, as we've seen.

They really can find the open man when they penetrate the lane, slowing it down, bringing it up.

Mitchell Baker, looking for first state title, going to the hoop, pulling it back out and taking the three.

That is confidence.

A lot of the Tracy Carolina probably not the shot they wanted but you're up by 15 another turnover and one back at you and you can see just the body language of the guys leaning over this to cater to you.

It is a tired worn out team and well, they should.

Well, I'm I'm worn out.

ANNOUNCER Just from watching it, Stu, I'm going to tell you this has been some kind of frenetic, crazy out here and very proud of the Carter High School.

And I just got to say, this is a heck of a mitchell Baker team.

I'm really, really impressed by the number of players they have and how well coached they are with this pressure.

They really do a nice job and they turn it over and they make you turn it over, get back in the press.

And you're right, they're a terrific passing team for Carter breaks the press jazz right the big guy up and in and he's had himself to have a heck of a game.

So the sophomore effort makes you feel any better.

They've got two starters come back on the ticket team because I know you're an alum and I really like jazz quite a lot, actually.

Three starters in the court.

Moon The sophomore was in there.

What a talent he looked today.

Did a lot of good in the few minutes he was in there.

Jazz Right.

The sophomore, the big guy who plays football.

Tony Big points, nice drive and not to be that time they cannot controls and tries to run with Mitchell Baker's not going to put it in the deep freeze They're going to keep firing it up there and we've got a 13 point game to the Carter hit a three with a chance quote oh that on the is that is nice to handle that £300 from one side of the hoop all the way around the reverse and you're looking at the future of the Carter basketball jazz right as a sophomore.

Well you get three against I hate to be up when you think back to that 4 minutes ago when Decatur had three when they turned it over and it's a it's only an 11 point game now.

The short baker pulling it out and calling a timeout, of course, 11 points is still a pretty good lead.

It looks smaller when you've been down 27.

But when you when you look at that stat sheet after the game and you see almost 20 some turnovers, it really hurts.

What does this tell you that all of the state basketball championships can be seen right here live on the field at the Web site at WW, dot, dot org.

That's w w w jock cheap dot.

Or let us also remind you that this is only a preview of action to come.

Still to come tonight, the girls triple-A state basketball championship followed by the night cap curve.

And I will bring you that one of the boys state championship at herd has seen a lot of action and there's a dictator run and there's been a series of runs for, as you said, just haven't been able to build on it.

Yeah, a lot like an NBA game.

When you get out here with a team like Mitchell Baker, it's just going to be a game of runs.

Carter just had too many turnovers.

Look at 25 turnovers.

And here you see Chad's right watch there.

That's just unbelievable for a guy that size to be able to slide like that.

A lot of body control and good footwork and six three and as I mentioned three other times in his only a sophomore to only get better and get bigger Yeah he grows he gets a couple inches taller and they get Moon out there.

He's only a sophomore as well.

They're going to have a pretty formidable front line.

I'd love to see our kid on the football field against turnovers.

There's a steal, there's a lay up and it is here.

And this is getting interesting.

That was Robert Kennedy Junior got a foul nice to have to foul only a nine point game with a buck 30 left.

Yeah I got to get out there foul and so far the pressure seconds tick off that clock looking for the turnover not to be so far Coach Wilson has to signal for the foul good pressure but you've got a foul.

There it is.

Well, why would you let eight or 9 seconds run off the clock and then foul?

Because only a minute and 30 to go.

You're down nine.

You've got every seconds precious.

Now here's Eddie Johnson.

He'll go to the foul line goes Carter Wilson decided to foul with 123.

Let's see how it works out well and you know the players are not always doing what the coach wants them to do.

This is true.

This one's up first.

One's good.

Believe me.

I know I've been a coach.

Believe me, I've been a player.

I've done a lot of things that coaching wanted to do, namely get in the game and take a few shots at both coaches.

I got the opportunity to talk to you before the game.

Terrifically nice men and good leaders of young men.

The twins were good.

7162.

Carter still with possibility, still, if he can get a three pointer or get a quick telephone, here we go to the hoop Jazz looking for jazz, right?

Big guy tries to put it up.

No good.

Tries to top it up pretty good, Pop.

Still the ball loose with the killer controlling up and no good jazz right inside.

And it will be the Carter's ball.

Yes right.

Battling and battling and to hold the team battling to get this thing back to a ballgame after where they were in the third and the start of the fourth quarter is really a really a credit to Mr. Carter high team inside to jazz Right.

And he'll go to the foul line and if you remember back oh man David Belsky said you know Coach Wilson, try to stay calm, try to keep his guys and the guys.

Right.

The coach and his team have stayed calm and have gotten back to this ballgame.

Yeah.

You know, if the Carter could play Mitchell Baker again, probably be a lot better.

You see a team, you can hear about this kind of pressure still.

You can hear about this kind of quickness, but until you face it, you just have no idea.

It's like playing against six or seven guys out there.

Look at those numbers.

Jazz, right?

22 points.

And he's boy, he's missed a bunch of free throws.

He could easily have 25, 26 points.

And speaking of Carter Wilson, his brother Richard Wilson, was the first African-American player to play at the Carter High School.

Played on the team with me, his mother, former mayor of Decatur.

Carter played on a state championship team with my brother.

This is a tremendous family and I go back a long way with these folks.

Second shot shot no good at the kid who tries to goal, but not today.

And there's a foul and with 59 seconds to go, those little hourglass hands are running out.

Mitchell Baker three for 17 field goals Look at the Kendrick for 16.

Yep they've done the job in this quarter and unfortunately, you know again, with 25 turnovers, you just take away ten of those turnovers, which we know we're not forced by.

Mitchell Baker it the score dictator's been shooting a good percentage so you say you hit half of those it's virtually a tie ballgame but those are things to talk about after a loss will give the Carter some credit.

This was a team that is averaging darn near 100 points.

They'll end up with maybe there's no telling with Mitchell Baker.

It's 71 now with a minute ago they could end up with 80.

But the Carter has held them well, well below their average, both well-coached teams and both teams.

Just, you know, when you come to the state finals, going to be a cliche, you'll never give up.

But folks have fought hard.

I mean, Mr. Carter team could have well, given up.

Oh, yeah, that's not me.

And I was about to give up the third quarter.

It was just it was unbelievable.

Jazz right.

With another rebound to go with those eight and it will be Mitchell Baker Ball Well 56 seconds.

What you do now is you just keep fouling and going down and shooting the threes.

Got a foul right away here.

And I see Coach Wilson making the move, calling the foul.

Simmons It seems like pressure there.

Maybe it backward.

Oh my goodness no one on the back foot but in the back a little bit of turnover for an easy hook a Jones plate in this case saying he was going for the ball.

They looked like was also going to make the foul and they're going to call that one.

You know, Rodney Mays, he only 8990 championship team, the 1996 championship team here at Mitchell Baker.

If he indeed wins this game, which it looks like he will, that's got to be special.

Yeah, no doubt about it.

Averaged 14 points.

I said, Coach matter, what do you do?

You just you just throw a ball out there doing things look well he goes I don't need tougher.

You know, Rufus McDuffie was a coach there and left in his own little tougher than coach, but, you know, my guys have give me everything.

And indeed they have certainly tonight final minute this game under a minute to go to Carter with a long three pointer.

Not today Mitchell Baker will control the ball and will control this game.

Well, people going to see the score and say, hey, dictator played a heck of a game.

Get this thing close scores.

Really the final score got to be indicative of how Mitchell Baker really his thinking about the middle of the first quarter until the middle of the fourth quarter.

Basically what was that run in the third quarter that made the huge difference of 26 points that they scored their.

And there was a moment towards the end of that third quarter and we both mentioned it, you mentioned it certainly highlighted it where if Carter could have come up with that one more possession, you could say there's probably not a lot of games at this level when you have two good teams.

Could have been a little more of a run.

This would have been a lot closer.

Yeah, that's not as good.

And it's down to 13 points and had three quick three turnovers in a row and could have got them to double digits.

Easy to say sitting over here.

Easy to say to Carter with no quit up and the chance for the dunk is no good.

Why not?

At this point, Johnson tried that dunk and there's the final rebound maybe for Mitchell Baker, but they're not going to stop.

Oh, no, they're not going to stop.

Even after 30 seconds left hook kind of fitting, Johnson started off in the first quarter missing that dunk and misses it again.

And he just doesn't have the legs.

You just don't realize it when you're out there in a game like this that you're not going to have the hops that you normally do.

Well, this is my first opportunity to see Mitchell Baker and coming in.

I saw it.

They scored 106, 124, and I asked how the world could a high school team in 32 minutes score many points?

I don't wonder anymore to great programs.

Both these teams coming back again to the state finals and again with the Carter with youth they have on their team.

Yeah, I'm going to say goodbye, but only for tonight.

He's a junior and he'll be back.

No, he is a senior.

This is all about it.

We'll find out.

He's going to.

Goodbye is waving goodbye tonight.

And Goins is a junior, so he'll be back.

I like this two Carter team and I certainly like Mr. Baker, too.

Tom is up.

Game is over.

And your state championship road to a boys is over.

Mitchell Baker.

Impressive.

Over Decatur, 74 to 60.

Well, we knew going in it was going to be a matter whether Decatur could handle the pressure and I don't know who can handle that type of pressure.

Stewart Well, they were relentless.

They came at you with a lot of players, 12 players getting significant time.

When you look at them to Carter, they could be a very good team next year.

Let's go down to the winning coach Cook side All right, Coach, you've been with a lot of these guys since middle school.

How sweet is that?

Right?

It's great.

It's excellent.

We've got a great group of kids.

I love them.

I'm happy for they play hard for me the whole year.

They do everything I do.

So I'm proud of them.

Very proud.

All right.

Well, thanks a lot.

Back to you, Jim saw your final score.

Mitchell Baker, 74 to Carter, 64 on behalf of Stu Tennant, Kurt White, David's Husky on Jim Tanaka.
